What's up this week with... EXO (Week of November 4-8)

EXO is growing more and more popular as they last in the music scene. Because of the EMA's, they are going up against One Direction (known as one of the biggest boy bands in the world to date) and Justin Bieber (known as one of the biggest names in pop history as of late). EXO fans cannot be more proud of this group of guys because not only are they jam packed with talent, the boys stay humble above all else, and represent Kpop with more than just their good looks. Beliebers and Directioners aren't as thrilled, seeing as a fan war is beginning to ripple throughout the nation of fangirls and fanboys and fanzees. But the EMA's aren't until November 11, so there is still room for the race. Fans better start voting.

At the night of November 7, Xiumin and Lay from EXO, the temporary special host to replace Shin-dong, who left for Latin America for a concert, introduced Korean food in the segment ‘Real Korean’ where they tasted a popular late-night snack ‘fried Gopchang’. Xiumin and Lay from EXO drew attention by eating up Gopchang (Korean dish of grilled intestines of cattle or pork) on MBC Standard FM 'Shin-dong’s Shimshimtapa' as special hosts. Particularly, the Chinese member Lay drew laughter by saying after tasting fried Gopchang,"This is really spicy. I am not good at eating spicy food,” but never stopping eating. Xiumin, who says he always watches his weight, said, "The taste is unimaginably fantastic. Incredible!" and kept munching Gopchang, proving himself as a well-known ‘eating god’.

Also, something exciting about EXO that happened within this week, their new reality show just dropped on MBC, and there are a lot of opinions already being thrown around about the show (mainly good ones, mind you).

Needless to say, the members have been quite busy and are steadily building making their mark in Kpop history. Let's all hope they have more success in the future and more variety show guestings since they're always a treat to watch!

SHINee To Attend MelOn Music Awards 2013

MelOn Music Awards will be featuring many performances this year on November 14 by your favorite artists.

EXO, SHINee, BEAST and Dynamic Duo have confirmed their performances during the 2013 MelOn Music Awards to be held at Seoul’s Olympic Gymnastics Stadium next Thursday, the awards’ co-organizer LOEN Entertainment and MBC Plus Media announced on Friday.

Like Us on Facebook :

EXO, one of the best rising stars of this year, will turn 12 wolves which go well with their sweeping hit tunes “Wolf” and “Growl.” Borrowing a concept from fantasy romance movie “Twilight,” the performance will be like a love story that EXO members go through when meeting a newly-transferred girl in a high school.

SHINee will show their previous hit tunes through solo stages as well as splendid performances using a light, which matches well with their team’s name. While BEAST will organize their stage with a concept of ghost, derived from their latest title tune “Shadow,” Dynamic Duo will render their No. 1 hit “BAAAM” with witty performances to deliver its lyrics about a man being used by a girl.

Last week, the fifth annual music awards announced top 10 music stars of this year, namely Ailee, BEAST, Busker Busker, Davichi, Dynamic Duo, EXO, G-Dragon, IU, SISTAR and SHINee.

Top 5 Males with the Most Beautiful Eyes

In Korea there's such thing as "Eyes Day," and in celebration of it B&Vitt Eye Center in Gangnam, Seoul surveyed 460 patients to see which celebrities had the most beautiful eyes. The results were actress Park Shin Hye and JYJ's Park Yoochun. After Yoochun followed Lee Jong Suk, EXO's Chanyeol, DBSK's Changmin, JYJ's Junsu and 2PM's Junho. But what about our list? Let's take a look at which males we think have the most beautiful eyes.

Any man who smiles with his eyes is a winner for me. Rain and 2PM's Junho may have small eyes with no double eyelid, but get these two to smile and you'll melt to the floor.

Like Us on Facebook :

Actor Song Seung Hyun has gorgeous eyes. When I first laid my eyes on him, the first thing that caught my attention were his eyes. They are perfectly almond shaped and perfectly perfect. Why is this man so sexy?

I'm not a fan of huge bulgy eyes but it works on Wonbin and boy, oh boy, do his eyes give him immense sex appeal.

Aside from the fact that he's easy on the eyes, what gives Lee Ki Kwang an edge is his beautiful eye shape.

But the man with the most unique eyes is actor So Ji Sub. Any adjectives I use won't be enough to describe their beauty or shape. So instead I'll let you take a look for yourself.

Tell us your top 5 males with the most beautiful eyes in Korea below!

The Celebs with the Most Beautiful Eyes in K-pop Are... Park Yoochun and Park Shin Hye!

November 11 is declared as "Eyes Day." prior to this celebration, B&Vitt Eye Center located at Gangnam, Seoul conducted a survey for 460 patients asking, "Which celebrity has the most beautiful eyes?"

Looks like patients threw their bets to which celebrities have the most beautiful eyes. And the most votes went to JYJ's Park Yoochun and actress Park Shin Hye

Like Us on Facebook :

Park Yoochun garnered 32% of votes for his smiling eyes. While second place was given to Lee Jong Suk with 29%, and in third was EXO's Chanyeol and DBSK's Max Changmin with 10% of the votes. However, JYJ's Junsu and 2PM's Junho grab the fourth spot having 9% of the votes.

In the female category, Park Shin Hye received 36% for her limpid eyes. While Girls' Generation's Taeyeon is at the 2nd spot with 21% and Sunny ranked third place with 16% of votes. Billiard player Cha Yoo Ram with 12% is in the fourth spot and Girl's Generation's Seohyun and actress Jin Sae Yeon came in fifth with 8%.

One of the representatives at the B&Vitt Eye Center says, "Through the survey, it was revealed that people consider having clear eyes as the highest criteria for having the most beautiful eyes."

Did you agree with the vote or did they miss our own choices for celebrities with the most beautiful eyes?

Who is the most handsome KPop Olympic idol?

Not only the national warriors of Korea, KPOP idols too are shaking London.

During the broadcast of MBC’s Section TV program on the 5th, Korea Tourism Organization (name may differ) had organized an on-site KPOP event during the Olympic season and it has indeed proven KPOP’s popularity in England.

The production crew managed to find IU, Super Junior and other more KPOP-represented artists’ album displayed in a local famous CD store.

They have even conducted a popularity poll regarding KPOP. In the “music” part, the gold medalist goes to Super Junior, while in the “looks” part, it was BEAST’s Lee Kikwang who took the #1 spot.

EXO's Reality TV Show 'Show Time' Begins Airing!!

As you already know, MBC has decided to sign EXO up for their first reality TV show, and the broadcast for the pilot happened on November 10.

Fans have already been live tweeting pictures from the first episode, most of which feature Luhan terrified as he supposedly runs for his life, and Suho crying?

Like Us on Facebook :

With the magic of photoshop and a dash of creativity, fans of EXO have already begun to work their magic on the stills of the show that they got a hold of. Some prime examples of the edits would be these:

What is being discussed currently about the pilot are how all the members look extremely handsome in their shots, and how it is nice to see them in a different setting for a change. Many of these reality TV shows are produced in order to give the fans a sense of what goes on with their favorite band when they are no longer as dolled up on stage, no longer playing a part, and how they are together as a group when they're more or less alone. Fans hope to see more of the members doing all sorts of things in the following episodes. Make sure you stay tuned!

EXO Loses Best Worldwide Act In EMAs To Chinese Pop Singer, Chris Lee

EXO may have lost Best Worldwide Artist, but still sent their best representatives.

EXO may have lost Best Worldwide Artist, but still sent their best representatives.

In a win that is stunning to K-Pop fans and will most certainly rock SM Entertainment, EXO suffered the loss of the MTV European Music Award (EMA) Best Worldwide Act to a Chinese pop singer. In the category for Best Worldwide Act, teen heart throbs Cody Simpson, Justin Bieber, and One Direction were seen as the biggest opponents to EXO. The interesting aspect about the fact that they were defeated by a Chinese female solo singer, is that her inclusion in the voting process essentially split the Asian contingency vote.

Like Us on Facebook :

Whereas Girls Generation had PSY as competition in the Asian market for the YouTube Music Awards, EXO had to face off against a Chinese national in their category. The win by Girls Generation, last week, and Chris Lee in the European Music Awards speaks to the way in which the Western music industry model is currently failing. Although, artists such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and One Direction command large ticket prices for their performances, their fan bases are not nearly as fervent as what is witnessed within K-Pop and Asian music as a whole.

EXO lost to Chris Lee, a Chinese pop singer, whose claim to fame was winning the music competition program Super Girl in 2005. Subsequent to her win, she became a pop sensation within China and is also known for her acting skills, as well as her haircut which references rock idol David Bowie. In her final vote for the singing competition Super Girl, Chris Lee received over 3.5 million votes which were established from a strong fan base. Chris Lee has released four albums and has acted in a film, as compared to the two albums released by EXO.

As K-Pop attempts to dominate the world market, there will be wins and losses. It is apparent that SM Entertainment has all but abandoned an American market to target Asia, Europe, and South America. The interesting thing is what happens when SM Entertainment's acts from Korea are forced to face up against their counterparts or challengers from larger countries like China. With the sheer number of Chinese citizens, the voting contingency in China may turn against Korean artists and towards their own artists.

EXO was represented at the EMA 2013 Awards by their members Kris and Suho. They made a great appearance for the group and were fine representatives for SM Entertainment. As K-Pop continues across a global market, what do you think the industry can do to achieve more success outside of Asia?

Which Leader of EXO Pulled Off Kim Jong Kook’s Name Tag on Running Man?

On the episode of SBS’ “Running Man” which aired on November 10, the members carried out missions given by Ryu Hyun Jin of the LA Dodgers. The final mission consisted of a battle between the Running Man team and 11 members of EXO

The final mission was a “Bells Hide and Seek,” and EXO attacked first. The EXO members patrolled the outlet mall in pairs searching for the Running Man members.

Kai was the first person to find Kim Jong Kook hiding in the storage room at the back of a store. Intimidated by Kim Jong Kook, Kai said, “I can’t do it by myself. Help me.”

Baekhyun said, “I’ll go get the other members,” and summoned all the members. Kim Jong Kook was cornered by four of the EXO members and after some scuffling around Suho finally pulled off Kim Jong Kook’s nametag.

The next target was Gary. Three EXO members discovered Gary hiding in another storage room and, they also eliminated Gary from the game. They didn’t forget to extend their greetings after they pulled off his nametag.

The remainder of the Bells Hide and Seek between the Running Man team and EXO will air next Sunday, November 17.

[Special Feature] Song Hits when Dance Hits?

[Special Feature] Song Hits when Dance Hits?

by Park Hyo-Jae(mann616@kyunghyang.com) | Sep 20, 2013

Idol group’s code for success has changed.

A ‘hook song,’ song with short chorus with repetitive melody, is not enough, but the choreography needs to make an imprint on the public.

The wind of dance that has been calm for a while since Wonder Girls’ “Tell Me,” is blowing again. In fact, it started when Kara’s hip dance made a sensational hit in the summer of 2009 from their song, “Mister.” In the same year, Brown Eyed Girls continued the heat with the ‘arrogance dance’ from “Abracadabra,” which this year received attention again when Psy borrowed the move for “Gentleman.”

dance

Left: Wonder Girls “Tell Me” / Right: Kara “Mister”

Choreography of idol groups has been much more diverse in recent years. T-ara lead the retro dance fever with hustle and disco from “Roly Poly” and “Lovey Dovey,” while After School performed high technique pole dance in “First Love.” Rookie girl group Wassup grabbed attention by grafting twerking, an African-American street dance, into their choreography. Twerking or a ‘hip shaking dance,’ is a type of dancing in which the dancer, shakes one’s hips in an up-and-down bouncing motion. Wassup’s music video as well as their practice clip was quite a topic on You Tube when it was released.

dance 2

Left: Teen Top “Rocking”/ Right: T-ara “Roly Poly”

Boy group Teen Top adopted ‘free step,’ a b-boy dance where you move your feet ceaselessly, in their newest track “Rocking.” A formal Wonder Girls member Sunmi combined modern dance moves in her new solo single, “24 Hours.”

As such, it appears that the focus of popular music is expanding from ‘listening’ to ‘performing.’ There’s an analysis that the means of embracing music has been changed since the development of video-sharing website You Tube or SNS, etc. Han Dongyoon, a public music critic, commented, “There are many video clips that copy idol group’s dance, to the point that there’s ‘K-pop cover dance,’ which is almost a kind of a genre overseas.”

Such flow is in mesh with Idol group’s preference to retro disco music or electronic dance music. Han added, “Idols usually perform dance music. They have tendency to perform difficult choreography to appeal to the public by differentiating them from other singers.”

Entertainment agencies grapple with creating distinguished choreography as much as producing good music. Thus attempts to differentiate from standard idol dance routines of perfectly angled choreography can be visible. Baek Soo-Won, public relations manager of TOP Media, agency for Teen Top, stated, “Characteristic of Teen Top’s performance, also known as the levitation dance, is the ‘busy’ choreography that offers no time to rest. We thought that a flashy foot movement of free step would make a different impression than other idol’s ‘knife-like’ perfectly angled choreography.”

Orange Caramel, a unit from After School steer passed the knife-like dance routine by creating a new character. Their strong point is the concept that suggests characters from animations through comic hand motions and exaggerated face expressions.

“There are many video clips that copy idol group’s dance, to the point that there’s ‘K-pop cover dance,’ which is almost a kind of a genre overseas.”

exo

EXO “Wolf”

Public’s eye-level heightened with more variety of dance moves. Bae YoonJung, the leader of Yama & Hot Chicks choreographers said, “You can’t compete with just point choreography that makes certain motions stand.” Choi Sun Hee, the leader of Switch choreographers, and who designed Wassup’s choreography said, “Not only point choreography, but the routine needs to fit with the whole flow of the song naturally. It is also important to define the group’s characteristics.” The two selected choreography from EXOs “Wolf,” which projected a tree, and Teen Tops free steps, as one of the best choreography with high degree of perfection.

However, emphasizing differentiation can cause side effects, such as injuries and suggestiveness of sexuality. It took 7 months for After School members to learn basic pole dance techniques. And it was common for them to have bruises on their thighs and legs. Public relations director Woo Young-Seung from their agency Pledis said, “The members went through a lot and it took a long time to create the choreography. There was also a lot of pressure because After School was known as the performer group from showing marching band, tap dance, etc. since their debut.”

Sexually suggestive content is also an old controversial issue to solve. For example, pole dance has a strong impression of being an American strip dancers dance in Korea, which is why there were disputes of right and wrong when After School first presented it.

Particularly, twerking has been regarded as a degrading dance that’s sexually provocative in America. There was a case where dozens of students were suspended from high school for creating a clip of them twerking in San Diego.

On this, Bae YoonJung commented, “There’s a tendency to perceive dances sexually when you spread your legs or shake your bottoms even just a little bit. But if that’s the case you can’t express dance freely. I hope people see dance as a form of a genre.” Regarding Wassup for attempting twerking she said, “I believe that the attempt itself is meaningful because it’s difficult to make the bounce happen with a physically different structured body from the African-Americans.”

Through this video, you can witness the love and support that the artists give to each other when they are promoting and how they have all genuinely become a family now.

For the group’s first appearance in the clip, Jonghyun asks Girls’ Generation, “What was the most memorable dance?” from the “Everybody” choreography. Jessica replies, “This~~~”, and several of the members begin to imitate the song’s dance. The members of Girls’ Generation appear again at the clip’s closing, singing along to the song’s lyrics. The members of Girl’s Generation were wonderful enough to be comfortable in front of all the fans and show them how they are like brother and sister backstage and how all of this love just comes very naturally between them now.

Weird Outfits K-pop Stars Wore Onstage

When our idols enter the stage we can't help but scream and jump in excitement. But when they appear in these outfits, we'll probably all chorus: "Wait... what?"

Taemin, honey, you know we love you but please help us understand what this "half-shirt" you were wearing while promoting Fuji is. We understand the whole 90's midriff top is making a comeback, but not for you. Definitely not for you.

Peek-a-Boo!

Underwear on the outside probably looks okay on Batman and Superman, but definitely not for these girls. CL, in her case, was slammed for her "panty outfit" with netizens commenting that she may have gone way too overboard with this daring piece.

In the next photo we have Subin of Dal Shabet endorsing another innovation in fashion: the detachable skirt the opens up to reveal a big surprise. Not.

Wild Something On the Lose!

Honestly, I love how Crayon Pop is putting on a very unique vibe so unlike many other girl groups that are, well, girly. The Crayon Pop girls usually don sport outfits but this one is just, for lack of a better word, an eyesore. There's too much print going on. I never thought I'd live long enough to see a leopard cross-breed print. And the headgear is just weird, you know.

Christmas in April

Well, looks like Santa came early and slightly skinnier.

I don't know, but I think after hearing what viewers had to say about their outfit all that the boys of NU'EST could say was "I'm Sorry". I'm not sure if their costumes remind me of the Three Musketeers, Santa Claus, or Christmas presents. Either way, it doesn't seem favourable. I know stylists like to get creative and formulate outfits that would draw attention to performances. This did the trick, alright. But it definitely wasn't... in-season.
